He Can Have a Role in The Hurt Locker! African Elephant Can Smell and Detect Explosives.
What can an African elephant do with its trunk? Carry food into the mouth, smell for food around, or even more fascinating, to use the trunk as snorkel to breathe while swimming. But there is one usage beyond imagination: They can use their trunk to smell and detect explosives.
Chishuru the elephant is actually one of such bomb disposal expert. Its incredibly sharp sense of smell can even detect the tiniest amount of TNT.
Photos show that Chishuru performs well in an experiment on #BelaBela in the #Limpopo Province of #SouthAfrica .
Researchers hid a filter paper, which contains a small amount of TNT, into one of the many plastic buckets. Chishuru raised one of his forelegs as he successfully found it.
In 2007, researcher discovered that a herd in #Angola were purposefully avoiding landmine fields left over from the civil war, and the research started there.
The three elephants who passed the smell tests detected TNT samples 73 out of the 74 times in the similar experiments, according to Ashadee Kay Miller, a zoology student at the University of the Witwatersrand in # Johannesburg .
